Podocarpus (family Podocarpaceae) A genus of evergreen trees and shrubs which are dioecious and whose mature seeds are fleshy, solitary, and often enclosed in the fleshy, enlarged receptacle. They yield valuable timber. P. totara (totara) is a New Zealand timber tree with great importance in Maori mythology. There are 94 species, occurring in southern temperate regions and extending north into the tropics.
