mycetome Special organ comprising a group of specialized gut or fat cells, containing symbiotic micro-organisms, e.g. as in the gut of many Coleoptera, Homoptera, and other insects. Gut mycetomes appear to develop from detached intestinal crypts containing symbiotic yeasts or bacteria, and they are believed to play a part in the metabolism of vitamins and other essential substances.
