Micropterigidae (class Insecta, order Lepidoptera) Family of very small, metallic-coloured moths believed to be the most primitive of Lepidoptera, and sometimes classified as a suborder (Zeugloptera). Adults are usually day-fliers, have functional mandibles (rare in Lepidoptera), and feed on pollen. The venation is similar in fore wing and hind wing. Larvae may feed on detritus. The moths are widely distributed, but with few species. The family includes the oldest fossil lepidopteran, which was found in Cretaceous amber.
