Melanotaeniidae (rainbowfish; subclass Actinopterygii, order Atheriniformes) A family of mainly freshwater fish that have a deep, compressed body (especially in the males), a pointed snout, and a small mouth. The base of the anal fin is longer than that of the second dorsal fin. There are about 19 species, found in tropical to subtropical waters around eastern Indonesia and Australia.
