Lycaenidae (blues, hair-streaks, coppers; subclass Pterygota, order Lepidoptera) A very large family of small to medium-sized butterflies. Coloration is often brilliant metallic, and sexual dimorphism is widespread. ‘Tails’ are often present on the hind wings. The fore legs of males are slightly reduced. The larvae are frequently associated with ants, and some species prey on aphids and scale insects. Distribution is widespread but mainly tropical and subtropical.
