Laminaria (order Laminariales) A genus of brown seaweeds in which the thallus consists of a holdfast, a stipe, and a flattened blade which may or may not be divided. They are found mainly on lower shores and in shallow coastal waters, usually attached to rocks; they are usually exposed only at the very low spring tides. See also OARWEED, SEA-BELT, and TANGLE.
