Haematoxylum (family Leguminosae, subfamily Caesalpinoideae) A genus of trees that have thorns in their leaf axils. The heartwood is coloured. H. campechianum (logwood) yields haemotoxylin, used for staining and dyeing. There are 2 species, occurring in Central and S. America, and 1 in south-western Africa.
