Gryllotalpidae (mole crickets; order Orthoptera, suborder Ensifera) Fairly cosmopolitan family of relatively large, burrowing, mole crickets, which are greatly modified for digging. They have large, fossorial forelegs, a strongly convex prothorax, reduced fore wings, a cylindrical abdomen, and no ovipositor. Some of the 50 or so species are wingless, and all stridulate.
