garrigue(garigue) A low-growing, secondary vegetation which is widespread in the Mediterranean basin and is derived from the original evergreen mixed forest. The dominant plants are aromatic herbs and prickly dwarf shrubs, with drought-resistant foliage, many belonging to the mint family (Labiatae) or Leguminosae. See also maquis and Mediterranean scrub.
