Brahmadeva
(fl. ca. 1092)
astronomy.
Brahmadeva was the son of Candrabudha (or ?r?candra, or Candrabha??a), a Br?hmana of Mathur? (or Madhur?). The epoch date of his only work, the Kara?aprak??a, is Thursday, 11 March 1092. The work contains nine chapters:
- On the mean longitudes of the planets.
- On tithis and so on.
- On the true longitudes of the star–planets.
- On the three problems relating to diurnal motion.
- On lunar eclipses.
- On solar eclipses.
- On heliacal risings and settings.
- On the lunar crescent.
- On planetary conjunctions and latitudes.
The work is based on the ?ryabha??ya of ?ryabha?a I, with modifications proposed by Lalla (see Essay V). It was particularly popular in Madras, Mysore, and Mah?r???ra.
There are commentaries on the Kara?aprak??a by Amare?a in the Ka??ada language (Karn???abh??´?vy?kh?na); by Brahma?arman (Vy?khy?); by D?modara, the pupil of Padman?bha (fl. ca. 1575) (V?rtti); by Govinda, the son of Vi?van?tha T?mbe (Viv?tti); by Sampatkum?ra (Vy?khy?); and by ?r?niv?sa Yajvan (Prabh?, ca, 1275). There also exist an Ud?harana, once (probably erroneously) ascribed to Vi?van?tha of Benares (fl. 1612–1630), and a Sadv?san? by Sudh?kara Dvivedin, who published the Kara?aprak??a along with this commentary as the twenty–thrid work in the Chowkhamb? Sanskrit Series (Benares, 1899).
