VITERBO, CARLO ALBERTO
VITERBO, CARLO ALBERTO (1889–1974), leader of Italian Jewry. Born in Florence, Viterbo studied law at the University of Pisa, coming under the influence of S.H. *Margulies and A. *Pacifici. An early Zionist, he participated in numerous congresses and was president of the Italian Zionist Federation and of Keren Hayesod. In 1936–37, he went on a study tour of North African Jewish communities on behalf of the Italian Jewish community. He also made contact with the *Falashas in Ethiopia, then under Italian rule, and published new documents he had found on their history (Annuario di Studi Ebraici, 2 (1937), 125ff.). From 1944 Viterbo edited the weekly Israel. He also published some Hebrew language textbooks (1933, 1955, 1968).
