VARSHAVSKI, ABRAHAM

VARSHAVSKI, ABRAHAM (1821–1888), Russian philanthropist and *railroad builder. Varshavski was one of the builders of the Moscow Brest-Litovsk-Poltava railroad. He went to St. Petersburg from Poltava province at the beginning of the 1860s and was a member of the *Society for the Promotion of Culture among the Jews of Russia. In his last years (1883–88), he acted as expert in the High Commission for the Revision of the Jewish Legislature (The Pahlen Commission).
