UNSCOP

UNSCOP , abbreviation of the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine, appointed by the General Assembly of the United Nations at a special meeting convened in April 1947 at the request of the British government. The committee consisted of 11 members, representing the governments of Australia, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Guatemala, India, Iran, The Netherlands, Peru, Sweden, Uruguay, and Yugoslavia. In their report, published in August 1947, the majority recommended the partitioning of Palestine into an independent Jewish state, an independent Arab state, and an internationalized "corpus separatum" for the city of Jerusalem. This recommendation was approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations on November 29, 1947.
