SOBEL, BERNARD

SOBEL, BERNARD (1887–1964), U.S. theater historian and publicist. Sobel, who began his career as an English teacher, was drama critic for the New York Daily Mirror, 1932–35. He wrote Burleycue: An Underground History of Burlesque Days (1931), A Pictorial History of Burlesque (1956), and A Pictorial History of Vaudeville (1961). As a theatrical press agent he represented Florenz Ziegfeld, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and many famous producers and actors. His memoirs, Broadway Heartbeat, appeared in 1953.
