Schott, Anselm
SCHOTT, ANSELM
Liturgist; b. Staufeneck, near Göppingen (Württemberg), Sept. 5, 1843; d. Maria Laach, April 23, 1896. He studied theology at Tübingen and Munich and was ordained in 1867 at Rottenburg-on-the-Neckar. In 1868 Schott became a Benedictine at Beuron; he made his profession June 6, 1870. At first he was active as lecturer in Beuron's school of theology. After the expulsion of the monks during Bismarck's Kulturkampf, he spent the years 1876 to 1881 in Beuron's Belgian foundation at Maredsous, working on the editing of monastic-liturgical books for the Missel des fidèles (ed. Dom Gerard van caloen), which stimulated Schott to edit Das Messbuch der hl. Kirche (Freiburg 1884) when he returned to Beuron in 1882. Subsequently, millions of copies of the various editions of the Schott Messbuch appeared, and it became an essential foundation for the liturgical renewal in German-speaking areas. The Vesperbuch lateinisch und deutsch (Freiburg 1893) did not enjoy such success. In 1892 Schott was sent to the newly founded Abbey of Maria Laach.
