SCHATZGEYER, KASPAR

Franciscan friar and opponent of Lutheranism in Bavaria; b. Landshut, 1463 or 1464; d. Munich, Sept. 18, 1527. Schatzgeyer (or Sasgerus) studied at Inglostadt in 1480, and after entering the Franciscan order, he lectured in theology from 1487 to 1513. He was then appointed guardian of Inglostadt, Munich, and Nuremberg. In 1517 he wrote the Status de observantia, advocating a compromise course in the disputes raised by the French Franciscan provincial, Boniface à Ceva, over the interpretation of the Rule of St. Francis. In that year Schatzgeyer became provincial of the Strassburg province, and began his preaching and polemical writings against Andreas osiander, Johann von staupitz, and Johann von Schwarzenberg. He wrote more than 23 books on grace, the Mass, the Sacraments, and monasticism, which won praise from Luther's foremost opponent, Johann eck, and which were published by Eck in Inglostadt in 1543.
