Sacred Heart, Sisters of the Society Devoted to the
SACRED HEART, SISTERS OF THE SOCIETY DEVOTED TO THE
A religious congregation of women of diocesan right (SDSH; Official Catholic Directory #4050) founded in Hungary and Czechoslovakia in 1941. The work of the society is directed especially to those who are not easily reached by other apostolic groups. In the U.S., the sisters are engaged in religious education in public and parochial schools, catechist formation, camps for children and youth, retreats and spiritual direction, catechetical programs for immigrants, and foreign missions. As a result of the rise to power of communism in Eastern Europe, the sisters moved their motherhouse from Hungary to California in 1957, under the leadership of Sister Ida Peterfy, the superior general. In addition to their houses in California, the sisters have overseas foundations in Taiwan and Hungary.
