LIPPMANN, EDMUND OSKAR VON

LIPPMANN, EDMUND OSKAR VON (1857–1940), German industrial chemist. He was born in Vienna and was director of sugar refineries in Duisburg (1881–86) and Halle (1890–1926). In 1926–32 he was honorary professor of chemical history in Halle. He wrote the standard books of his period on sugar, Chemie der Zuckerarten (19003), Geschichte des Zuckers (1890, 1900, 1929), and Entwickelungen der deutschen Zuckerindustrie von 18501900 (1900). He was a leading historian of chemistry, writing Entstehung und Ausbreitung der Alchemie (1919, 1931), Geschichte der Ruebe als Kulturpflanze (1925), Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften (two volumes, 1923), Geschichte des Wismuts zwischen 1400 und 1800 (1930), and others.
