GABINIUS, AULUS°
GABINIUS, AULUS °, Roman governor of Syria from 57 to 55 b.c.e. He was granted extensive authority, and his system of rule was characteristic of Roman imperialistic methods toward the end of the period of the republic. He put into effect Pompey's decision to diminish the area of the territory of Judea, deprived Hyrcanus of the title ethnarch, divided the country into five districts, and rehabilitated the Greek cities which the Hasmoneans had destroyed. He defeated the efforts of Aristobulus ii and his son Alexander to seize power in Judea.
