Arriaga, Rodrigo de
ARRIAGA, RODRIGO DE
Spanish Jesuit philosopher and theologian; b. Logroño, Spain, Jan. 17, 1592; d. Prague, June 7, 1667. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1606 and taught philosophy at Valladolid and theology at Salamanca. In 1625 he was sent to the University of Prague, where he remained for the rest of his life. There he became professor of theology, then chancellor, and finally prefect of studies. His important works were Cursus philosophicus (Antwerp 1632, and other editions) and Disputationes theologicae (8 v. Antwerp 1643–55) based on St. Thomas Aquinas. He is known as one of the foremost Spanish Jesuits of his day and as a leading representative of the school of Suárez.
