ANDREW OF PESCHIERA, BL.
Dominican; b. Peschiera on Lake Garda, Italy, c. 1400; d. Morbegno, Switzerland, Jan. 17–18, 1485. At an early age Andrew Grego entered the dominicans at Brescia and was sent to San Marco, Florence, for his studies. He had a special attraction for the virtue of obedience. His life work was the evangelization of Vatellina, a district in southern Switzerland, where he labored so zealously for 45 years that he became known as its apostle. He assisted in the foundation of two Dominican houses, in Morbegno (1457) and in Coire. At times he acted as inquisitor at Como. He was especially solicitous for the poor. Solemn veneration was accorded him at the translation of his remains to the chapel of St. Roch in 1497. His cult was approved Sept. 23, 1820, by Pius VII.
Feast: Jan. 19.
