Ambrose of Cahors, St.
AMBROSE OF CAHORS, ST.
Bishop?; d. near Bourges, France, c. 770. In the account of his life that has come down to us it is impossible to sort out any certain historical information. According to a doubtful tradition he held his episcopal office at Cahors under pepin iii the Short. Slandered and persecuted despite his works of charity, he gave up his see and lived for three years in a cave near the Lot River. While returning from a pilgrimage to Rome, he died at Ernotrum (now Saint-Ambroise-sur-Arnon). His cultus, dating from the tenth century, is perhaps the best evidence for his saintly career.
Feast: Oct. 16.
