AEMILIAN, SS.

The Roman martyrology lists eight saints by this name; other martyrologies list more. The most noteworthy are the following:

Aemilian, martyred at Dristra (Romania) under the Emperor Julian the Apostate.

Feast: July 18.

Aemilian of Cogolla (also called Emilian Cucullatus and Emilian-with-the-Hood), hermit, parish priest; d. Tarazon, Aragon, 574; the abbey of S. Millán de la Cogolla was built at his hermitage and has his relics. His life was written by braulio; he is regarded as a patron of Spain.

Feast: Nov. 12.

Aemilian, Bishop of Cyzicus, ninth century; he opposed Emperor Leo V the Armenian in the controversy over iconoclasm and died in exile as a result.

Feast: Aug. 8.

Aemilian, Bishop of Nantes, perhaps in the eighth century; though he is not named in the early lists of bishops of Nantes, legend claims he fought against the Saracens near Autun.

Feast: Sept. 3.

Aemilian (also Eminian) of Lagny, abbot, d. c. 648; an Irish disciple of St. fursey (furseus), he succeeded him as abbot of Lagny-sur-Marne.

Feast: March 10.
