Adeodatus (Deusdedit) II, Pope
ADEODATUS (DEUSDEDIT) II, POPE
Pontificate: April 11, 672 to June 16, 676; b. Rome, the son of Jovinian. Adeodatus succeeded vitalian and, like him, defended orthodoxy against monothelitism. He was remarkable for his generosity and for inaugurating the practice of dating events in terms of his reign. He enlarged and enriched the Benedictine monastery of St. Erasmus on the Coelian Hill, where he had been a monk. Two letters defending monastic exemptions are attributed to him (Patrologia Latina, ed. J. P. Migne 87: 1141–46). Some martyrologies celebrate his feast on June 26, but the bollandists say he had no cult.
