Tukārām (c.1607–1649). Hindu poet, who, after an unhappy second marriage, turned to religion, starting with the worship of Viṭhobā at Panḍherpur. He studied the Bhāgavata of Eknāth, and after a period of study and meditation, began composing verses in Abhaṇga metre. His Abhaṇgas number 6,000–8,000 and are devotional in character, with practical advice for the ordinary man and woman.
