Tucci, G. (1894–1984). Italian explorer and orientalist, the most influential scholar of Indian and Tibetan Mahāyāna Buddhism of recent times. He organized a total of eight expeditions to Tibet, and in 1948 he stayed in Lhasa as a personal guest of the fourteenth Dalai Lama and was the only W. Buddhist scholar to spend time at the monastic citadel of bSam-yas. Among his more important publications are Tibetan Painted Scrolls (1949), The Religions of Tibet (1980), The Theory and Practice of the Mandala (1949), and Storia della filosofia indiana (1957).
