Staniloae, Dumitru (1903–93). Romanian Orthodox theologian and guide to the Church during decades of political turmoil—leading to his book on Church-State relations in the particular setting of Romania. He became editor of a church paper, and then moved in 1949 to Bucharest. He began his long task of translating the Philocalia, which was interrupted when he was arrested, in 1958, during a clamp-down on the Orthodox Church. He was pardoned in 1964, and continued his work in Bucharest until his retirement in 1973.
