Pa-chiao Hui-chʾing

Pa-chiao Hui-chʾing (Jap., Bashō Esei; c.10th cent. CE). A Korean Zen master of the Igyō school (see KUEI-YANG-TSUNG), who travelled to China and became the dharma-successor (hassu) of Nan-tʾa Kuang-jun. He is best remembered for his kōan (Wu-men-kuan 44): ‘If you have a staff, I will give you a staff. If you do not have a staff, I will take your staff away.’
