Moku-funi (Jap., ‘silent not two’). Zen belief that the realization of the one, undifferentiated buddha-nature (bussho) in all appearances can only be expressed in silence. This is the ‘thundering silence’ of Vimalakīrti, a lay Buddhist praised by Mañjuśrī in the sūtra bearing Vimalakīrti's name.
