Weissenfels

Weissenfels (vīs´ənfĕls), city (1994 pop. 34,816), Saxony-Anhalt, E central Germany, on the Saale River. It is an industrial city and a rail junction. Manufactures include beer, shoes, paper, and metal products. Chartered in the 12th cent., Weissenfels passed to Prussia in 1815. The baroque palace (17th cent.) served as the residence of the dukes of Saxe-Weissenfels from 1680 to 1746.
