Semonides of Amorgos

Semonides of Amorgos (sĬmŏn´Ĭdēz, əmôr´gŏs), fl. c.650 BC, Greek iambic poet, b. Samos. He led a colony to the island of Amorgos in the SE Cyclades c.630 BC In one of the few extant fragments of his work, he satirizes women and likens their natures to the sea, mud, and various animals. The fragments reveal his sense of humor. His name also appears as Simonides.
