Henry Yates Satterlee, 1843–1908, American Episcopal bishop, b. New York City. In 1896 he was consecrated as the first bishop of the diocese of Washington, D.C. The National, or Washington, Cathedral, whose cornerstone was laid before his death, has its origin in his plans and work. The most important of his several books is A Creedless Gospel and the Gospel Creed (1895), in which he argues that the dramatic self-revelation of God was not confined to the person of Jesus but is manifest in present experience.
