Maureen Orcutt, 1907–2007, American amateur golf champion and sportswriter, b. New York City. The daughter of a journalist and a woman golfer, she began playing golf at the age of seven. A superb long iron player, she won more than 65 major amateur champtionships beginning in 1922, and played in the first four Anglo-American Curtis Cup matches (1932–38). Also a pioneering sports journalist, Orcutt wrote about golf for several newspapers and periodicals, and she covered women's golf (1937–72) for the New York Times, where for many years she was the only female sportswriter.
