Nazaré
Nazaré (näzärĕ´), town (2011 pop. 15,158), Leiria dist., W central Portugal, on the Atlantic Ocean, 17 mi (27 km) SW of Leiria. It is a fishing port and popular seaside resort. Part of the town, including a noted church dating to the 14th cent., is on a height (360 ft/110 m) connected by a funicular to the main town. To the north is Praia do Norte where, due to an offshore canyon, towering waves roll in at times; surfing records have been set there.
