Charles Tristan Montholon, marquis de (shärl trēstäN´ märkē´ də môNtōlôN´), 1783–1853, French general in the Napoleonic Wars. He accompanied the former emperor, Napoleon I, to St. Helena. Returning to Europe after the emperor's death, he acted as one of the executors of Napoleon's will. Involved (1840) in Louis Napoleon's unsuccessful coup at Boulogne (see Napoleon III), he was imprisoned from 1840 to 1847. After the Revolution of 1848 he was elected to the legislative assembly. He was the author of Histoire de la Captivité de Ste Hélène (1846).
