Bode Miller (Samuel Bode Miller) (bō´dē), 1977–, American skier, b. Easton. N.H. A superb athlete, he joined the U.S. ski team in 1998 and competed in the Olympics for the first time that year. Versatile, fast, and controversial, he is a risk-taker with an unorthodox style; he leans backward, careening from side to side while achieving astonishing speeds, but often loses control, sometimes in spectacular crashes. Miller won the World Cup overall championship in 2005 and 2008 and has amassed more than 30 World Cup victories, the most ever by an American man. At the Olympics, he won two silver medals (combined and giant slalom) in 2002, failed to medal in 2006, captured gold (combined), silver (super-G), and bronze (downhill) in 2010, and won a bronze (super-G) in 2014, setting a career record for an American Alpine skier and becoming (2014) the oldest Alpine skier to win a medal.

See his autobiography (with J. McEnany, 2005).
