Leung Chun-ying

Leung Chun-ying, 1954–, Hong Kong business and political leader, often referred to as C. Y. Leung. He studied surveying at Hong Kong Polytechnic and real estate management in Bristol, England. Returning (1977) to Hong Kong, he became a real estate executive and founded (1993) a surveying company, which merged (2006) with a large London-based firm. Leung also became a senior government adviser with close ties to China's Communist party. He was appointed to the committee that helped draft the Basic Law, under which Hong Kong has been governed since 1997, and later served on the committee that oversaw (1997) the transition from British to Chinese rule. In 2012 Leung was elected chief executive of Hong Kong.
