Edward Laning (lăn´Ĭng), 1906–1981, American painter, b. Petersburg, Ill., studied Art Institute of Chicago and Art Students League of New York. He is best known as a painter of murals for public buildings including the mural (1935) for the main dining hall at Ellis Island, The Story of the Recorded Word series (1938–40) for the New York Public Library, and those on the building of the transcontinental railroad (1980) in Union Station, Ogden, Utah.
