Lago Enriquillo (läg´ō ĕn´rēkē´lyō), salt lake, SW Dominican Republic, the largest lake of Hispaniola and the Caribbean islands, c.89 ft. (27 m) below sea level. Lago Enriquillo, which has no outlet, has a large and varied wildlife population, including flamingos and iguanas. It is situated close to the Haitian border. In the early 21st cent. the lake's waters increased significantly, leading to a doubling of the lake's surface area and the inundation of surrounding communities and farmland.
