Eagleburger, Lawrence Sidney
Lawrence Sidney Eagleburger, 1930–2011, U.S. government official, b. Milwaukee. A career diplomat, he joined the Foreign Service in 1957 and held a series of embassy, State Dept., national security, and Defense Dept. posts, including serving as a senior aide to Henry Kissinger in the Nixon and Ford administrations, before becoming ambassador (1977–81) to Yugoslavia and a State Dept. assistant secretary (1981–82) and under secretary (1982–84). A Republican, he was and deputy secretary of state (1989–92) and secretary of state (1992–93) under President George H. W. Bush; he was the first Foreign Service officer to hold the latter post. He also chaired an international commission that established (2002) procedures for Holocaust victims and their heirs seeking compensation for unsettled claims against German insurance companies. Eagleburger, who expressed (2002) strong misgivings over plans for the invasion of Iraq, was later (2006) a member of the Iraq Study Group.
