DAYTON, JONATHAN (1760–1824)

Jonathan Dayton, the youngest signer of the Constitution, represented New Jersey at the constitutional convention of 1787. He spoke several times at the Convention in support of small-state positions. He was afterward speaker of the house of representatives and a senator. In 1807 he was arrested for conspiring with aaron burr but was not tried.
