SNEH, EPHRAIM(1944–)

Israeli brigadier general and politician, born in Tel Aviv. Ephraim Sneh received his medical degree from Tel Aviv Medical School and served as a medical officer in the Israel Defense Force (IDF). From 1978 to 1980 he commanded an elite IDF unit, and in 1981 commanded the Israeli security zone in southern Lebanon. From 1985 to 1987 Sneh served as head of the civil administration in the West Bank. Elected to the Knesset in 1992 on the Labor Party list, he served as a member of the foreign affairs and defense committee. Sneh was minister of health from 1993 to 1996, and in 1999 was appointed deputy minister of defense. In March 2001 he was appointed minister of transportation, serving until 2002. In 2004 he was chair of the Knesset subcommittee on defense policy and planning
