MATZPEN (Compass, in Hebrew)
Small Israeli political party, founded by students in 1963 after a split with the Communist Party. In 1967 it attracted public attention by protesting Israel's occupation of the West Bank. From then until the early 1970s, when it supported Palestinian resistance in the Occupied Territories, it was Israel's most hated anti-Zionist group. Although it never had more than a few dozen members and nearly dissolved after the 1993 Oslo Accords, former members became increasingly influential, especially with regard to its assertion that Jewish colonization was the primary cause of the Israel-Arab conflict.
