Georgetown

Georgetown Capital and largest city of Guyana, at the mouth of the River Demerara. Founded in 1781 by the British, it was the capital of the united colonies of Essequibo and Demerara and was known as Stabroek during the brief Dutch occupation from 1784. It was renamed Georgetown in 1812. Industries: shipbuilding, brewing. Pop. (2002 est.) 225,800.
