Sacchini, Antonio (Maria Gasparo) (b Florence, 1730; d Paris, 1786). It. composer, influenced by Gluck's reforms. Active in Venice, Rome, and Naples, 1762–9. Worked in London 1772–81, writing 17 operas which won him popularity. Settled in Paris 1782 where he enjoyed even greater vogue. Piccinni's most formidable rival in It. Wrote over 40 operas, incl. Semiramide, Armido e Rinaldo, and Œdipe à Colonne; 2 syms.; 6 str. qts.
