The Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia consists of 52 members elected by popular vote in 52 constituencies. The Redistribution Act in 1955 increased House membership from 37 to 43. Amendments to the House of Assembly Act in 1967 increased House membership from 43 to 46. Amendments to Chapter 22 of the House of Assembly Act in 1978-79 increased the membership of the House to 52.

Salaries: Effective 2003: All Members receive a Sessional Indemnity of $33,256 and an Expense Allowance of $16,628. In addition, the Premier receives $55,737; Ministers with Portfolio $39,708; Ministers without Portfolio up to $39,708; Speaker $39,708; Leader of the Official Opposition $39,709; Deputy Speaker $19,860 and the Leader of a recognized Party, other than the Opposition $19,860.
