WORD CLASS
WORD CLASS, also grammatical category. Terms in linguistics for a category of words that have been grouped together because they are similar in their inflection, meaning, functions, or a combination of these. Many linguists prefer the term to PART OF SPEECH, which has traditionally been used for a more limited set of classes that are less rigorously defined. Others use the three terms as synonyms.
