Wiesse, María (1892–1964)
María Wiesse de Sabogal was a Peruvian writer. She joined the indigenist movement around 1919 and in 1922 married the noted painter José Sabogal. She was an active member of the group led by the socialist activist José Carlos Mariátegui, about whom she wrote a biography, José Carlos Mariátegui: Etapas de su vida (1945). Wiesse was a born storyteller, yet her style is more didactic than literary. Among her numerous books in various genres are the biographical studies Santa Rosa de Lima (1922; Saint Rose of Lima) and José Sabogal, el artista y el hombre (1957; José Sabogal, the Artist and the Man); the novels La huachafita (1927) and Diario sin fechas (1948; Newspaper without Dates); and the short story collections Nueve relatos (1933; Nine Stories), Aves nocturnas (1941; Nocturnal Birds), Pequeñas historias (1951; The Small Histories), Linterna mágica (1954: Magic Lantern), and El pez de oro y otras historias absurdas (1958; The Gold Fish and Other Absurd Histories).
