Vásquez, Francisco de Asís (1647–1713)
Francisco de Asís Vásquez (also Vázquez; b. 10 October 1647; d. 1713) Guatemalan chronicler of Franciscan colonial church history. Vásquez is best known for writing the carefully detailed, Crónica de la provincia del santísmo nombre de Jesús de Guatemala in two volumes, the first appearing in 1714, the second one in 1716, edited and printed by the San Franciscan Monastery in Antigua, Guatemala. He is also the author of Historia del venerable hermano Pedro de José de Bethancourt and Historia lauretana. The latter narrates the vicissitudes of the Virgin of Loreto, who is venerated in the San Francisco Church in Antigua.
As well as being a renowned professor of philosophy and theology, Vásquez was deputy of the Third Order and superior of the Franciscan monasteries of Guatemala and San Salvador. He became the bishop's representative for the province of Nicaragua and held the titles of examiner of curates and confessors, and censor of the Inquisition. He became the chronicler and custodian of the Franciscan province of Guatemala, a position of supreme prominence in the Franciscan order.
