Tela Railroad
Tela Railroad
Tela Railroad, a railroad line built by the United Fruit Company on the north coast of Honduras, radiating inland from Tela. United Fruit acquired the rights from Sam Zemurray, owner of the rival Cuyamel Fruit Company, in 1913. The Tela Railroad Company, a United Fruit subsidiary, constructed an ice plant, a water system, electrical generators, a hospital, and a 1,000-foot wharf at Tela. United also acquired rights to the Trujillo Railroad, which lay to the east of the holdings of Vacarro Brothers, a rival banana firm operating from La Ceiba. By 1921, Tela had moved ahead of La Ceiba as Honduras's chief banana port.
